Things to see in Budapest Hungary

Anyone wondering where to go on holiday in Eastern Europe would do well to consider the city of Budapest Hungary, especially if they are looking to keep costs down.

Budapest is not just a good destination because of the price. There are many other factors than the cost of a pint to visit. On a historical level, two cities were joined to create the modern day Budapest we know. The cities of Buda and Pest were only joined in 1873, so the history of Budapest as one city is still relatively new. Its still quite easy to see the differences.

The castle and many of the cities historical monuments lie in Buda. It is also full of labryinth-like alleyways and parks. If you head to the summit of Gelert Hill, you will be treated to the best view of the city. The Fishermans Bastion also gives stunning views of the parliament building.

If you want a more Western European trip, head over the Danube and visit Pest. It is jam packed with eateries and places to relax with a drink and friends. Dont mistake Pest for having a lack of history, as the parliament building is situated here. If you ever get the chance to see a classical concert in the basilica, take it. The acoustics are amazing.

There are almost too many things to watch and do in Budapest. The capital has a host of world heritage sites and has accolades announcing it as one of the most beautiful cities in the EU. The laid back nature of Budapests population mean that many view it as an ideal place to live.

If you had to choose a single thing that the city is famous for that would be hard. If forced to you may turn to the thermal baths, which atttract both foreigners and locals. For the best journeys around Budapest, pick up a bicycle. Although Buda and the castle district is fairly hilly (well, its built on a hill so very hilly might be a better description) the city is very bike friendly. Seeing the main sites is a breeze on a bike, thanks to the number of cycle lanes. There is plenty of park land around Heroes Square where you can ride out to the large complex of thermal baths.

You should also check out the metro at least once on your visit. It is steeped in history and is home to the oldest line in the world, the M1. You dont have to be a train spotter to enjoy the experience.
