The Singleton抯 Countdown to Valentine抯 Day

You try to ignore it but it抯 impossible to escape from. The gift shops are full of heart shaped cards and teddy bears, the travel agents have 搑omantic weekend trips to Paris?advertised, your attached friends topic of conversation is 搘ill he propose?? and all you can think is where the hell are you going to find a man in time for Valentine抯 Day. Yes, it抯 the season of romance; the time of year all singletons fear more than walking into a bar with their skirt accidentally tucked into their pants following a visit to the toilet!

If you can identify with these thoughts, don抰 despair. Whilst it may be difficult for you to get a marriage proposal in such a short space of time, you may be able to get a date in time for Valentine抯 Day. Here抯 a few places for you to try and if you抳e tried them before try them again; men will be on the lookout at this time of year too so don抰 be afraid to make yourself available:-

1. Take a good look around at work. Ok, so you抳e worked there for years and none of the single guys have appealed to you before but in desperate times its good to take a second look. Is the guy in accounts really so dull? Maybe he is ultra cool out of work and will have you giggling all night if you give him a chance.

2. Work off those extra pounds piled on at Christmas at the gym and eye up those hunky bodies. Start by taking in the view on the treadmill and then once you抳e spotted someone you like, ease your way over and ask if he would mind showing you how to use one of the exercise machines in exchange for an apr鑣-gym beverage.

3. If you don抰 have a dog, borrow one and take it for a long walk. You抣l be amazed at the amount of guys walking their dogs who will say 揾ello?to a fellow dog walker.

4. Ask your attached friends to find out if any their boyfriend抯 friends have recently become single and get them to arrange a casual get-together to introduce you.

5. Last but not least, join an online dating site and message every half-decent man available. By the time Valentine抯 Day arrives, you抣l be inundated with offers and will have to donate the surplus bouquets of red roses to your local hospice because you抳e run out of vases!

Try one, if not all, of the above, and there抯 a very good chance you won抰 be spending Valentine抯 Day alone!

The Top 3 Things Every Woman Wants For Valentine抯 Day

Valentine's Day is around the corner. So what do you get her this year?  Maybe you're tired of doing the same old "red roses and a box of chocolates" thing and you want to make this year a Valentine's Day she'll remember without spending a fortune.

Here are the top three things every woman wants for Valentine's Day.  You may be surprised!

1.  A Show of Effort
Women want to know that their man has put some thought and energy into making their Valentine's Day special.  They want to see that there was time spent in preparation for the evening.  It's not about how much money you spend.  In fact, it's better to have spent more time than money on Valentine's Day.

Plan an evening that requires a little forethought, and preparation.  Women know if you just stopped at the local convenience store to pick up some roses on your way over.  Give her a night dedicated to her wants and desires - not just something thrown together at the last moment.

2.  Proof You Listen to Her and Know What She Likes
As a man, one of your most important jobs in your relationship is to listen to your woman.  Women drop clues on a constant basis in everyday talk.  For example, if the two of you are out shopping, she might see a bunch of tulips, and say "I just love tulips!  Pink tulips are my favorite flower."  One of the best things you can do is hear that information, remember it, and use it at a later time.

Then on Valentine's Day buy her pink tulips instead of the standard red roses. Chances are she will be so impressed that you even knew she likes pink tulips, because she forgot she said it, or even that you remembered all this time, and that you went to the trouble to surprise her with her favorites.

This can apply to anything including a certain food she loves but never indulges in, a hotel or retreat she'd like to take with you, a piece of jewelry she adores but would never spend the money on herself, or maybe something off beat like she's always wanted to learn ballroom dancing - Sign the two of you up for lessons.  There are many ways to make Valentine's Day memorable if you just listen.

3.  Pamper Her
All women love to be pampered.  Some may not be used to it, or not even know what they like, but I promise you all women will love it.  A gift certificate to the spa is not the same.  Here's why - When you pamper a woman you are taking care of her, you are making her feel good, and by you doing the pampering you are showing your love.  So how should you pamper her?  Every woman likes different things more than others, so don't be afraid to ask her ahead of time.  Here are some suggestions to get you started.

You could make a bubble bath for two complete with candles and champagne.  If she's not a bath girl, you might consider buying a small bottle of massage oil, have her get into her bath robe and give her a back massage.  If she's a woman that spends her days on her feet, you may want to give her a pedicure.

Remember that however you pamper her it should be done for her enjoyment alone.  It should not be used solely as a way to get her warmed up for sex.  If she leads it that way, then all the better, but go into it with the intention of just making her feel good.  Women can sense when they are being primed for sex, and when it is a genuine act of kindness.

The key is to listen to her, find out what she really likes, and plan an evening that caters to her.  Surprise her with her favorite things instead of the typical Valentines roses, chocolates, and teddy bears. And, spend time and effort to make this Valentine's Day a night she will remember and brag to her friends about.

This Valentine抯 Day Say 揑 Love You?With Cookies

What better way to tell your sweetie 揑 Love You?than with some fresh baked cookies? Give some of these sweet treats a try this Valentine抯 Day. Cupid himself would be impressed by these yummy creations. They are sure to be a hit with your Sweetheart, Children, Neighbors or anyone else special to you as well. Don抰 forget to get the kids involved! I still have memories of making Valentine抯 Day Cookies as a child.

Heart Shaped Cookies
Make you favorite roll-out sugar cookie recipe. Use a heart shaped cookie cutter to cut them. Bake, frost and decorate to your heart抯 content. You can sprinkle them with red or pink crystallized sugar before you bake them, or frost and sprinkle with some tiny candied hearts or pink sprinkles after they are baked. Use icing in a tube to write a message or draw a picture on the cookie.

Cookie Lollipop
Heart Shaped cookie lollipops are always a big hit. Start with basic sugar cookie dough. Roll it out to about 1/8th inch thickness (place the dough between two sheets of wax paper to keep the dough from sticking). Use a heart shaped cookie cutter and cut an equal amount of hearts. Place half a bamboo skewer, a lollipop stick (found at craft stores) or a Popsicle stick on the bottom half of the hearts. Place the remaining hearts on top and press them firmly together. Bake according to your recipe instructions and decorate as desired.

Tip ?soak the skewers or Popsicle sticks in water before placing them on the cookies to keep them from getting burnt.

Valentine抯 Rice Krispies Treats
Make Rice Krispies Treats and while the mixture is still warm use a large heart shaped cookie cutter to cut them out. If you can抰 find a cookie cutter of the right size, draw a heart on cardboard and use it as a template. Just lay it on the sheet of Rice Krispies Treats and trace around it with a knife. For even more Valentine fun add a few drops of red food coloring to the marshmallow mixture for a pink version of the sticky treat.

Cookie Dough Jar
Place the dry ingredients of your favorite cookie recipe in a pretty jar. Write the recipe for the cookie on a heart shaped piece of paper or a valentine抯 note card. Tie it with a pretty bow around the jar. Make the glass jar even more special by drawing little red hearts on it with a permanent marker. These are so cute and easy!

Bouquet of Cookies
Bake up some of your favorite cookies. Get a pretty basket and line it with a red or pink cloth napkin. Arrange the homemade cookies in the basket. If you抎 like, you can also add some heart shaped cookie cutters, Valentine抯 Day themed sprinkles, or some hot chocolate mix. Another option would be to use a piece of floral foam and arrange some decorated Cookie Lollipops within the basket and fill the bottom with Hershey抯 Kisses or other Valentine Candy.

All of these cookie ideas for Valentine抯 Day make wonderful gifts for a special someone that has a personal touch. They are sure to be appreciated, after all, who doesn抰 like cookies?

A Valentine抯 Day Guaranteed to go off like a Frog in a Sock

Valentine抯 Day! What a great day for romantics at heart! Any excuse to celebrate a day of l抋mour is in my opinion, a good excuse and on the 14th February cards, flowers and the whole love thing will be celebrated for many with romance and style.

The history of this day has origins in both Christian and Ancient Roman tradition. As a matter of fact there are many legends surrounding Valentine and the day it was yet to become. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia (1908) there are least three St Valentine抯 recorded.

One legend has it that in 269 AD in ancient Rome, Saint Valentine was secretly performing marriages and engagements in direct contravention of the Emperor Claudius II, who banned marriages and engagements in an attempt to recruit and enlist more soldiers (recruitment numbers were down because the men wanted to remain with their loved ones). Alas and alack it was all too good to last, when St Valentine抯 secret was discovered, as punishment for his crime, he was thrown into jail, beaten with clubs, followed by execution.

The legend goes that before he was beheaded on 14th February, he fell in love with his jailor抯 daughter and wrote her a billet-doux (love letter). It抯 said he signed off on his note with 揻rom your valentine? Many years later in 496 AD, Pope Gelasius declared a day of honour for Valentine and so began Valentine抯 Day.

Meanwhile, in ancient Roman days the 14th February celebrated and honored Juno, Queen of Roman Goddesses and Gods who was also said to be Goddess of woman and marriage.

Another legend has it that Valentine was an early Christian who made friends with many children. The Romans apparently imprisoned him because he didn抰 worship their gods. The children, missing Valentine, would hand him loving notes through the bars of his cell.

Whatever the legends, the 14th February is the day where many of us exchange cards (anonymously or not) and do something romantic for our partner.

Having a pretty good idea on what women want, flowers, chocolates, and a card (yes I know some of us are still waiting? I wondered what men wanted and so asked a group of men if they could have something they really wanted what would it be?

The majority of responses I抦 not able to reprint (side splittingly funny nevertheless) and asked them to think seriously about what they would like to have on Valentine抯 Day. Never having been asked before, this proved to be a somewhat difficult question for them to answer, but soon started warming to this question.

For partners scratching for ideas, the following will give you some idea what he really wants if it were up to him. I was told, come up with any of the following and it抯 guaranteed Valentine抯 Day will go off like a frog in a sock:

Please note that the opinions contained herein are not necessarily those of the author?
1. A beautiful meal at a restaurant (probably because they couldn抰 have what they really wanted first up so this was a safe start);
2. A good book and the silence to read it;
3. A weekend away at a resort or hotel;
4. Day-tripping around coastal or country areas, eating breakfast and lunch out at different places;
5. Hanging out with loved one;
6. Breakfast in bed;
7. Driving an open top sports car for the day;
8. A ride in a supersonic jet;
9. Nice bottle of single malt 100 year old scotch;
10. Police arresting and taking away the mother-in-law;
11. Massage in a day spa;
12. Complete day of wife or partner agreeing with everything said;
13. 24 hour nag-free day;
14. Someone else working at your day job for the day;
15. Wife or partner completely losing their voice for the day;
16. To be alone;
17. Visit an art gallery;
18. Visit a museum;
19. Play golf or go to a sporting event ?whatever is in season; and
20. Ride a Harley Davidson.

Even if you抮e not into Valentine抯 Day, it抯 the perfect excuse to have that frog go off in a sock by doing something wonderful for you and your partner, and if single, you can do something especially for you.

A Note From Saint Valentine - A First Person Tale Of This Wonderful Day

Let me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third century. That was long, long ago! At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. I didn't like Emperor Claudius, and I wasn't the only one! A lot of people shared my feelings.

Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families. As you might have guessed, not many men signed up. This made Claudius furious. So what happened? He had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Young people thought his new law was cruel. I thought it was preposterous! I certainly wasn't going to support that law!

Did I mention that I was a priest? One of my favourite activities was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, I kept on performing marriage ceremonies -- secretly, of course. It was really quite exciting. Imagine a small candlelit room with only the bride and groom and myself. We would whisper the words of the ceremony, listening all the while for the steps of soldiers.

One night, we did hear footsteps. It was scary! Thank goodness the couple I was marrying escaped in time. I was caught. (Not quite as light on my feet as I used to be, I guess.) I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death.

I tried to stay cheerful. And do you know what? Wonderful things happened. Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love.

One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She helped me to keep my spirits up. She agreed that I did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages. On the day I was to die, I left my friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed it, "Love from your Valentine."

I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day. It was written on the day I died, February 14, 269 A.D.

Now, every year on this day, people remember. But most importantly, they think about love and friendship. And when they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way of love, and they laugh -- because they know that love can't be beaten!
